How to Apply

DSF complies with the guidelines of the Law Society of Upper Canada in the recruitment of articling students. The guidelines can be found at www.lsuc.on.ca.  Applications are due by July 6th and interviews will be conducted during the week of August 13th.

Applications should include the following:

  • cover letter
  • resume
  • copies of undergraduate and law school transcripts, as well as graduate transcripts if applicable
  • a list of courses you are planning to take in your third year of law school

Reference letters are welcomed, but not required.

JR. PROGRAMMER AND IT SUPPORT ANALYST – TORONTO

The Jr. Programmer and IT Support Analyst will be assisting in writing, coding, analysing and testing software programs and applications. This includes researching, designing, documenting, and modifying software specifications throughout the production life cycle. The candidate will work within the IT Department and will be available for first-level Help Desk support. This a position with regularly scheduled hours Monday through Friday, with additional hours as needed after hours and on weekends. The Jr. Programmer and IT Support Analyst will report to the IT Manager.

Job Functions

The ideal candidate will be able to:

• Convert original visual design concepts flawlessly into front-end coding and back-end structures. Strong knowledge of SQL, HTML, XHTML, DHTML, CSS, XML, .NET, PHP, JavaScript and other programming languages is essential.
• Create database objects (tables, views, stored procedures, triggers, etc.).
• Make recommendations to improve and gain efficiency for existing processes.
• Assume responsibility for Analysis and Design, Data Management, Writing Code, Debugging, Documentation and for End-User Training.
• Think outside the box to contribute ideas to the team.
• Innovate ideas and solutions for various projects.
• Collaborate with vendors in solution architecting when needed.
• Able to prioritize and track multiple tasks across multiple projects, under tight deadlines.
• Enjoy working closely with others in a mutually respectful environment.
• Think strategically and creatively.

The candidate will be responsible for IT & Help Desk Support Tasks such as:

• Providing first level contact and convey resolutions to customer issues.
• Providing technical assistance and support for incoming queries and issues related to computer systems, software, and hardware.
• Responding to queries either in person or over the phone.
• Writing training manuals.
• Training computer users.
• Maintaining daily performance of computer systems.
• Responding to email messages for users seeking help.
• Accurately determining the nature of the problem at hand.
• Walking users through the appropriate problem-solving process.
• Installing, modifying and repairing computer hardware and software.
• Cleaning up used computers.
• Running diagnostic programs to resolve problems.
• Resolving technical problems with Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN) and other systems.

Job Requirements/Qualifications

• Professional certification is a plus/College degree in computer science or related field.
• 1+ years experience in programming as Data Developer working with MS SQL Server 2008 or higher.
• Experience developing C++, Python, PHP, SQL & Other Programming Languages and writing scripts to automate operations.Help Desk Support Experience.
• Detail oriented.
• Excellent communication skills.



CORPORATE/COMMERCIAL LAWYER – BARRIE

Devry Smith Frank is looking for a corporate/commercial lawyer for its Barrie location. The successful candidate will have 7+ years of experience working on corporate, commercial and real estate files in private practice. Experience and knowledge in wills and estates would also be an asset.

    CORPORATE COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE/CONDO LAWYER

    We are currently looking for a junior lawyer to join our growing Commercial Real Estate and Business Law practice groups. The ideal candidate will have 2 – 4 years of experience in Commercial Real Estate and Condominium Law. General Corporate/Commercial experience and/or experience in Wills and Estates would be considered an asset. The successful candidate will be involved in structuring and completing complex real estate and land development transactions on behalf of our commercial and real estate clients. The candidate must have good business instincts, excellent drafting and interpersonal skills, and a proven ability to handle files independently or as part of a team.



    REAL ESTATE LAW CLERK – WHITBY

    We are seeking an experienced Real Estate Law Clerk with at least 4+ years relevant experience to work from our office located in Whitby, Ontario.     SENIOR CORPORATE LAWYER

    We are currently seeking an experienced corporate lawyer to join our office in North York. The successful candidate will have a growing practice and a business-oriented approach to law. By joining DSF, he or she will enjoy the benefits of established technical, administrative and peer resources critical to growing a practice. The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurial-minded and have 7 to 12 years of business/corporate law experience from a reputable firm or as a sole practitioner. Candidates with a knowledge of tax law as it applies to corporate transactions will be preferred.

    We are growing again! Devry Smith Frank LLP is looking for a Family Law lawyer for our our Whitby location.

    The ideal candidate will have an entrepreneurial approach to practising law and 3-5 years of experience drafting pleadings, separation agreements, marriage contracts, settlement conference briefs as well as excellent negotiating skills.     Articling & Students

    Articling & Students

    We typically hire two articling students annually.

    Framework of the Articling Program

    As a mid-sized full service law firm, our articling students have the opportunity to be exposed to all areas of practice in the firm. Although we may utilize a rotation to give students access to a broad and comprehensive articling experience, DSF maintains an informal component to the articling program. By allowing an informal component to the program, students are able to gain greater access to areas and practices of particular interest.


    The Articling Experience

    Many of the lawyers at DSF have also articled here.  Our firm invests a tremendous amount of resources into the articling program as we look to our students as a key component of the firm’s continued growth. We endeavour to give our articling students the independence and the ability to make decisions that impact the matters in which they are involved.  Lawyers are decision makers and we want to ensure that the necessary skills are learned from the beginning.

    Our articling students gain court experience, as well as meet and communicate with clients, lawyers and representatives from outside the firm on the matter in which they are involved. Some of our articling student’s responsibilities include: Weekly attendance at examinations and motions, carriage of small claims court files, and writing articles for our quarterly newsletter. They also assist on motions, pre-trials, mediations, arbitrations, trials (preparing materials, negotiating with opposing parties, and attending), and conduct research.


    Remuneration

    DSF offers a salary competitive with other mid-sized Toronto firms, and pays the tuition of the bar admission course regardless of hire-back. Salary is not paid during the bar admission course.


    Summer Law Student Program

    Typically, DSF hires up to four summer law students. We accept applications from first and second year law students. Consistent with our commitment to developing and retaining talent, at DSF we often first look to the existing summer students to fill future articling positions.


    Summer Student Experience

    The summer student experience is very similar to the articling experience.  If a student demonstrates a willingness and ability to handle complex matters, as much responsibility as permitted will be given. Please review our outline of the articling experience for further details.
