Wayne O. Lewis, B.Sc., J.D.

Wayne holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto, with majors in neuroscience and psychology. He subsequently obtained his law degree at Osgoode Hall Law School in 2005, and was called to the Ontario bar in 2006.
Wayne completed his articles and first year of practice at a respected law firm in Vaughan, Ontario where he focused on commercial, corporate, leasing and litigation matters.
In 2007, Wayne started his own law practice, located on Bay Street in the heart of Toronto’s financial district. He advised start up companies and assisted with their establishment, as well as handling commercial transactions and dealing with intellectual property matters including copyright, trademark and patent related matters. Wayne represented entertainment companies and artists in the music, film, and written genres and negotiated artist agreements, performance agreements and management agreements.
In 2009, Wayne assumed additional responsibilities as In-house Intellectual Property and Information Technology Counsel for Queen’s University in Kingston Ontario. In this role, he drafted, negotiated and reviewed licence, intellectual property and research agreements on behalf of Queen’s University’s research departments and hospital affiliates as well as Queen’s University’s technology transfer office, PARTEQ. Wayne’s work included drafting agreements between Queen’s University and industry sponsors. He also negotiated agreements involving: collaborative and non-collaborative research, clinical trials, grants, data transfer, confidentiality, publication agreements and equipment and property lease agreements. Wayne monitored the compliance of domestic and international research policies with Queen’s Research Policy Statements. During the review process of Queen’s University’s collective bargaining agreement, Wayne advised Queen’s University on research related provisions contained within the agreement.
Wayne has developed an array of respected clients and professional relationships, which includes small and medium sized businesses, major entertainment artists, research organizations, universities and hospitals.
Wayne is a volunteer Mentor of the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus Alumni Mentorship Program.
Wayne is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and the Toronto Intellectual Property Group.
Wayne joined Devry Smith Frank LLP in 2010 to continue his practice in Corporate/Commercial, Intellectual Property and Entertainment law with a particular interest in start up companies.
